February is in full force here. Lots of gray. Lots of low temps. And even when it's sunny, the wind is still too chilly for me. In my mind, it's supposed to already be spring. I'm from south Louisiana. I can't help it. The Tulip Magnolias are already budding in Acadiana.
I've gone into survival mode. Translated = lots of indoor projects. Particularly the DIY kind.
I'm on my 3rd batch of homemade laundry powder. I've tweaked each batch and have finally found the recipe I like best. I mentioned my laundry soap to a couple of friends, then a couple more... And I've learned that I really have some fabulous friends who are every bit as hands-on-crunchy-thrifty-quasi-hippie as I am. So here's the recipe for you girls (and now I have it written down somewhere!)
cast of characters ::
(In 2 parts because I was too lazy to carry things up and down the stairs!)
ingredients::
1 bar Fels-Naptha
1 cup Washing Soda
1 cup Borax
**Zest the soap bar. (**Here's where the toothpick comes into play.) Mix ingredients in bowl. I pass mine through the food processor to get in extra fine and well mixed.
And voila! You're very own fresh and clean smelling laundry powder!
Save in a sealed container. For an he washer, use 2 tsp.
**I've tried Dr. Bronner's Peppermint soap and decided I prefer the fresh smell of the Fels-Naptha. The best part is that it doubles as the most amazing stain remover. I save a little corner of the bar for this purpose. See wrapper on the bar for instructions.
**This is the only annoying part of the process. I constantly have to stop and slide the toothpick between the rows to dislodge all of the built up soap.
Oh, and in case you're wondering about the 1/2 cup measuring cup... I have no idea! I should clearly stick to photos of kiddos.
All the same, perhaps next week I will take some photos of my felted laundry balls that work as yummy smelling fabric sheets.
