wednesdays, water days

We fondly refer to our back yard, as a back area.
If I look out Lila's window (because that's the one I'm most often sitting in front of, rocking her to sleep), I can spot 11 other houses.
We share walls with 2 other houses/families.  When they open and close their front doors, we know.
You can't run to get the mail in your jammies.  You can't sit outside and enjoy the quiet... because it's not.

But we've adjusted - or maybe we're still adjusting -  to this interesting experience of living on an Army post.

Either way, despite our back area, we're managing to grow lettuce, strawberries, a handful of herbs, and plenty of colorful plants.
While 11 is far too many houses for me to see at once, they're mostly filled with amazing Army families... who are willing to lend a helping hand, who smile and wave, who are all adjusting too.
While the privacy we're used to doesn't exist here, the old school notion of a 'neighborhood' is alive and well.  Like, really.

Half-day-fun-day-Wednesday now has the extra fun of 'water Wednesday' added to it.  An assortment of neighborhood kiddos gather in the grassy area between the houses and run wild!  The moms hang out and chat with the itty bitty bambinos in the shade (and there's plenty of them ;D).  It's the best kind of fun.  The best kind of a neighborhood for sure.  And it's right in our 'own' back yard.

And those memories of lazy days in the yard will be so much richer in the future!
